Returning home, yesterday, this is my quick warm-up painting. I wanted to try out a new pad of watercolor paper and my new imitation Kolinsky brush.
I did have a reference photo. It was taken by Bill, not this trip, but in a previous one. We were driving west on Interstate 80, east of Des Moines. Just after the sun went behind the clouds, we pulled off the road and stopped in front of a furrowed field.

Thanks for viewing.

I was just saying to someone today that warm ups are so important….they give us so much.

I love the tones, and the small flock of birds you’ve added. Nice touch.

I’d say your new watercolor paper and your Kolinsky-esque brush are in the winners column! Lovely warm up painting!

Thank you. The paper is 300 lb., so I don’t have to stretch it. The trade-off is cost – each small sheet was $2.00.

Fun! I like playing with and trying out new art supplies. I am moving more toward synthetic brushes, though I will say a good Kolinsky sable watercolor brush is a definitely good experience. Looking forward to more paintings – this one is lovely and catches the sky beautifully. As someone said, the birds are a really nice touch.

My new brush is synthetic, but it “imitates” sable. We’ll see how much I use it over time. Thanks for commenting.

It’s surprising to see how similar this is to views across the agricultural fields here. The fields are just off the island, in an important agricultural region. We love driving through them – so many times I’ve admired the neat rows disappearing into the horizon, below skies that are never the same. Very nice warm-up!
