Chasing the Sunset, Iowa

Returning home, yesterday, this is my quick warm-up painting. I wanted to try out a new pad of watercolor paper and my new imitation Kolinsky brush.

I did have a reference photo. It was taken by Bill, not this trip, but in a previous one. We were driving west on Interstate 80, east of Des Moines. Just after the sun went behind the clouds, we pulled off the road and stopped in front of a furrowed field.

Thanks for viewing.

One of six children, I was raised by a busy mom, who instilled in me a love of fabric. Though I learned to sew and knit at a young age, it was the arrival of my first grandchild that pushed me into action. A long-time knitter, I am now ready to explore all things fiber.

  1. Fun! I like playing with and trying out new art supplies. I am moving more toward synthetic brushes, though I will say a good Kolinsky sable watercolor brush is a definitely good experience. Looking forward to more paintings – this one is lovely and catches the sky beautifully. As someone said, the birds are a really nice touch.

  2. It’s surprising to see how similar this is to views across the agricultural fields here. The fields are just off the island, in an important agricultural region. We love driving through them – so many times I’ve admired the neat rows disappearing into the horizon, below skies that are never the same. Very nice warm-up!
