Sunday Sketching – Pencil Portrait

I’ve decided to do some sketching every Sunday this year. It helps me understand my subjects better and gives me an opportunity to work on values and composition.

Today I pulled up a photograph of AshLynn, my great niece. Her mother is a children’s librarian. Last July we were at story hour. I was snapping away with my cell phone and was charmed by Ashlynn doing an exercise called Flitter Flutter.

Ever since I have been wanting to render the scene in watercolor. My first step toward that goal is this quick sketch.

One of six children, I was raised by a busy mom, who instilled in me a love of fabric. Though I learned to sew and knit at a young age, it was the arrival of my first grandchild that pushed me into action. A long-time knitter, I am now ready to explore all things fiber.

  2. It’s great to have a regular day or time to get sketching. Years ago I made Tuesday morning at 10am my time, as I had 3 school-age children and that gave me Monday to get most house jobs done, and then get onto my art. It worked well! Love your wee sketch.

  3. Your sketch is really marvelous! I have been doing a bit of sketching myself this year… I am journaling in Margaret Renkl’s Leaf, Cloud, Crow journal! I sketched my “New Year’s Day” Downy Woodpecker! I hope that this bit of sketching will help me improve as the year progresses!
