A New Addiction

Alright. Almost no fiber objects were created this week. I will share the one thing I did make with yarn for my crochet in the round workshop. It is a teaching aid.

The six stages of starting a round crochet object

Instead I spent multiple hours on sketching from the Inktober prompts.

Day 7: Enchanted

Day 8: Frail

Day 9: Swing

Day 10: Pattern

Day 11: Snow

Day 12: Dragon (fly)

You may have noticed a few insects have shown up. I find them fun to draw.

And finally, this: why is the act of sketching on ink and paper so addictive?

One of six children, I was raised by a busy mom, who instilled in me a love of fabric. Though I learned to sew and knit at a young age, it was the arrival of my first grandchild that pushed me into action. A long-time knitter, I am now ready to explore all things fiber.

  1. I love this! Maybe because it’s all s new and there’s so much to learn! I have taken a break from writing ‘cept for my blog and have drifted back to beadery… sewing beads on certain articles of clothing. Our first love is always there… maybe they need a break from us, too!

  2. If I look at these images as a collection, I notice something. Considering only the directionality of the composition, all the elements seem to rise from the lower right end of the composition to the upper left. Not deliberate on my part. I wonder if it has anything to do with being left-handed?

  3. Lovely sketches Laura, if I were more skilled with the computer I would create embroidery designs. Maybe my computer Guru (Mike) can figure it out.

  4. I like your ‘in the round’ teaching aide. I might have to try something like that for my students. Not many of them get to the level of crocheting in the round, but for the ones that do, that would be very useful. I might try it with other projects too, like for making a simple flower or butterfly. I also really love your sketches!

    1. Thank you Yolanda. Regarding the crochet workshop, I have noticed that the 8 year old students are struggling and need more focused instruction. The older kids are doing okay. Doing the sketching is a personal challenge. I want to be able to draw confidently when I am working with fabric.
