Milestone

Today I am writing my 100th post on Daily Fiber blog. I am pleased that this milestone arrives at the same time as another mini-achievement: the completion of my oakleaf hydrangea block series. After some consideration I determined that the final block count will be nine, as you see pinned to my wall boards in the photo above.

Decisions still need to be made on how to finish. After consulting with a few friends, I have settled on the arrangement of blocks and the decision to use a dark border around each block as if it were an individual painting. Also, I will add a border around the whole quilt – width and color yet to be determined.

As you can see, only the first block is quilted so far. I will finish the quilting after assembling each row.

Hand-painted cotton fabric , hand embroidered with a flannel background. Each block is 10 by 12, including flannel border.

One of six children, I was raised by a busy mom, who instilled in me a love of fabric. Though I learned to sew and knit at a young age, it was the arrival of my first grandchild that pushed me into action. A long-time knitter, I am now ready to explore all things fiber.

  1. This look really impressive. May I ask.. how do you do that quilting? I’ve never worked with fabric so I have zero reference points. Am looking forward to watching this project grow. (leaf..grow..haha.. I know.. not funny at all..)

    1. It’s called Free Motion Quilting. You use a small, hoop-like foot on your machine and lower the feed dogs. (Feed dogs is the machine part that provides tension on the fabric and moves the fabric evenly forward.) Then you move the fabric in different directions with your hands. This is probably TMI, if so, I apologize.

  2. Great achievement. I am looking forward to see how you complete this quilt. I am completing my Dear Jane quilt at last. All blocks and triangles are joined and all I have to do is decide how to join the corners. If I ever learn how to post I will post it. I need my computer guru to visit.
