This Week’s Theme in Artist’s Way

The author titles Week 5 “Recovering a sense of possibility.” This chapter presents some hard questions that have me examining the ways that I put myself second and my family members first – something that I had accepted as necessary and virtuous. I learned today that this behavior can be a trap. But then, moving on from self-sacrificial actions, the Way gives me exercises to explore what I would and could do if it weren’t too selfish a thing.

The exercise, Forbidden Joys, asked me to list things that I would love to do, if I were allowed to do them. When I completed my ten things, I felt – exhilarated. Writing the list down made me smile. Reading it afterward warmed my heart. The theory is that writing about one’s forbidden joys breaks down the barrier to doing them.

Next, the Way tells me to post my list somewhere highly visible. Awwww! do I dare? After all they are Forbidden.

In the spirit of the Artist’s Way, what follows are ten things that I would love to do if they were allowed. To provide a full experience, I chose photographs illustrating my forbidden things. Half are my own photographs and half come from internet sites.

  1. Swim naked.

2. Climb onto a roof to watch the sun set.

3. Run up and down the stairs.

4. Eat chocolate cake once a week.

5. Interrupt someone who is speaking – especially when they are boring or pompous.

6. When travelling, stay the night at the finest hotel in town.

7. Have breakfast for dinner, or dinner for breakfast.

8. Take out the carpet in my studio and paint the concrete floor.

9. Pet every dog that I meet.

10. Hug every toddler that I meet.

There, that wasn’t so bad. I hope you tolerated my self-indulgence in revealing these forbidden joys. If you liked reading mine, perhaps you should try to make this list for yourself. You might just be convinced to actually do one of them.

A Morning Stroll through the Garden

What a difference a year makes. This spring, we have had sufficient rainfall, and the plants are blooming madly. Bill and I both took photos this morning. Here are mine, taken with my little point and shoot canon.

  1. Solomon’s Seal under the oak tree. 2. Catmint with an onion background. 3. Chives growing in a concrete block. 4. Clematis with blooms the size of my palm. 5. A few paeonies. 6. Mouse-eared coreopsis nestled among various pansies. 7. Crepe myrtle shoots. 8. A collection of textured leaves. 9. Woodland columbines.

The bearded iris are just starting to bloom, but my photos of them didn’t turn out well. Perhaps I can persuade Bill to share a few of his.

There is a storm coming tonight and these blooms may end up shredded by wind. A life on the prairie has its trials. (sigh) It’s best to enjoy nature’s floral bounty promptly, for tomorrow it may be gone.

100 Day Project: Days 32-35

I’ve figured out which day I am on, AND,

The process of painting dragonflies on postcards broke open my mental block.

I started painting fabric right away, after swatching the colors I want to use.

Using these colors and a variety of techniques, I painted backgrounds on rectangles of white quilting cotton. Earlier I had cut out dragonfly body shapes from craft foam. These shapes and an assortment of leaves were laid on the painted fabric to serve as masks. Laying the pieces in the sun printed the masked shapes.

The next day, I did more fabric painting, just to make sure I had enough selection.

With the backgrounds prepared, I began inserting the dragonflies into the pieces.

Day 34:

Day 35

I’m in love with this last guy. He will be the focal point of the finished product.

In the next week I plan to add finishing touches to these two paintings and begin work on the rest. My layout calls for five paintings sewn together with blue borders in between them. What happens after that is done will take a bit more cogitation.

Happy Birthday Bill

Yesterday was dedicated entirely to celebrating my husband’s birthday.

Here we are having a photography adventure at Unity Square park.

I wonder if you can guess his age?

His favorite hobby is taking pictures, especially with the honking big lens affectionately referred to as The Hubble.

Another favorite hobby is fly fishing…………………………………………………………………….

Birthday Card – with apologies to Robert Indiana.
