Sunday Sketches Duo

On this sketching Sunday, I have two quick (sort of quick) sketches for the viewers to consider. First is my value study for the chickadee painting I am planning.

This image is a combination of the two chickadee photographs that Bill gave me for the 100Day Project.

He also gave me this delightful and slightly mysterious photograph of Lu’s face, as she peered through a wood structure at the CITY Museum in St Louis.

I did this study,

I intend to refine the drawing further, then ink like I did her brother’s portrait a few weeks back. This will be no. 44 in #The100dayproject.

Sunday Sketching – On the Pond

By now I have looked through all of my photos from the July trip and selected some for use in my art. Today I want to study this image of my husband and brother in a rowboat on the pond at brother’s property.

The picture as is tells the story of enjoying an early morning on the pond in July. I wanted to simplify the scene, focusing on the men, the boat and the pond. Using the photo editor, I re-framed it, increased the light and applied a filter, to reveal this.

I like this low-value image a lot and can visualize how I would paint it. But first I wanted to look more closely at the values, and also practice sketching the subject. So I took out all the color and zoomed in on the boat.

Now it’s perfect for sketching in graphite.

This was a fun and easy sketch. I’m inspired to move on to watercolors.

Sunday Sketching – Portrait

Fourteen candles for Henry

This is a preliminary sketch from a photograph I took of Henry on his birthday in November. Instead of having a cake with candles, he wanted to scatter the candles across the whole table. I managed to catch his face in an expression both solemn and thoughtful.

I hope to develop this sketch further, once in graphite and again in watercolor.
